my grandfather kept a log of the trip cross country in 1955. I have scanned it, and typed the text for easier reading.

We took what they called the Scenic Drive to the picnic area and for about a mile the road corkscrewed around and up and down narrow dirt roads until we got to the Picnic Area which was nice and unloaded the food onto a picnic table under the trees. We all had lunch - let the kids run around for a while - repacked the supplies and took off for 'Silvertown". This place had been created specifically for the taking of Movies at Western Pictures and the landmarks were all familiar. The circular inserted gives the Ranch an importance that it does not deserve and not to be compared in anyway with Knott's Berry Farm. We parked the car and then started walking first thru Fort Apache which of course only consisted of a phony front. This fort is also shown in the Rin-Tin-Tin pictures under Fort Clark. From there we walked to the town called Silvertown and the first thing we ran into is a regular 42 Street Auction Sale operated by high pressure schnooks. Won't go into the details of that except to say that Helen thought she got a buy in a Carving Set. Bob and I left the gals there and walked thru the one old time street described in the circular about 300 ft long and saw some swinging doors which proved to be a Saloon altho it is not described in the circular. Kids and all went in - big Movie Lights overhead- table w/checkered oilcloth tablecloths - flies by the million- and we order a couple of beers 20c each. Seemed reasonable-big goblets- but the beer seemed to disappear quickly. The glasses were so thick and heavy that by the time you got the froth off there wasn't much of anything left. After a couple of these we walked the rest of the town's one street - couldn't see anything worth while buying including post cards-and rejoined the women at the auction which was as much out of place as I was. The auctioneer announced that the Rodeo would start at 4 P.M.
