At 8:00PM the grown ups took off to visit a classmate of Kay's when she was in St. Elizabeth's Hospital in training. Her name at that time was Lucile St. Armand and she came originally from Newburyport-Salisbury-Amesbury-Salem way. Her husband's name is Tom O'Malley (known as Mike) came from Wellesley and Newton Upper Falls - where he had worked for the town and as he says the most he could possibly make would be $68.00. He had been to California in 1942 during the war and the impression that he got at that time was that everybody was rushing and if in the rush somebody fell down nobody would stop to help but would simply step over you and keep going. Anyway his wife Lucille had a brother - a Doctor- who had come out to California and like all Californians started writing back extolling the advantages and opportunities and gradually wore down the resistance so they started to save their money - arranged to sell their home-sent their personal belongings and furniture-china-linens out by truck for $300 and finally took off. They came out in June - 1953; Kay and Bob in Sept - 1953. They now live in Pico about twenty miles away and out here that is only considered a short rut. He took an examination for an apprentice with the General Telephone Co
