From Church stopped in at the Iowa Pork Shops to pick up some Groceries and after talking with the Manager he agreed to cash a check. At the time they OK anybody's check they take a photostatic copy of each side with his OK. In my case I put on Kay and Bob's address for identification. This of course is a tremendous store - far larger than any we have at home - air conditioned - roomy aisles and very pleasant sales people. I asked him how many items he handled and he said frankly he didn't know. They keep a perpetual inventory and he figures that they completely restock every two months. I asked him if he would tell me what his volume was and he said it averaged $70,000 per week. He originally came from Illinois and it took him quite a while to get used to everything (including Liquor Stores) being open on Sunday. The variety they carry is of course tremendous and the competition very keen. Left there and to the Gas Station to tank up and talked with the Manager there. This is a very busy place and the service is courteous and complete. When a car pulls in there is no waiting- an attendant runs and I mean it - he runs. Puts in the requested gas. checks the oil. battery -tires- brushes out what he can of the car and washes the windshield inside and outside. This is all done without any request by the driver before he accepts any money. I don't know of a place in Boston that gives comparable service without a specific request. This Manager came from the State of Washington and came here to get away from the rugged winter. He wouldn't go back. Found out he works six nine hour days and as Manager gets $425 per month. Regular help get about $350. It's a curious thing out here in that everybody outside of the skills has their salary based on a monthly basis.
