Saturday July 30th

Santa Barbara Mission
Rocky Nook Park
Santa's Kitchen

Bob's Car

We had been so much enthralled by the Mission at Capistrano when we heard that the Santa Barbara Mission exceeded it in beauty - setting and architecture that we all agreed that we should make this the final trip on our visit. So despite the fact that we didn't get to bed until after one o'clock - we started getting the house awake at 7AM but not without many protests and yowlings. Original plans called for getting away at 8:00 AM but actually it was 8:45 before we left the house. Gladys had decided to forego the trip and stayed home to rest up. We took the Coast Road up - distance of 126 miles. There was still a haze over the mountain tops and it didn't clear away until after 11 AM. Beautiful scenery that we cannot match in our New England coast line. High hills at every turn-down into deep valleys with the road cut thru and around tremendous hills. Beautiful wide well kept roads where we could roll along 50 or 60 without any trouble.

Debbie got a bit car sick on the way up and we had to stop three times to get her straightened out. One thing about this mountain scenery - it seems at time to be entirely of hard-packed dirt-
