no stones or rocks or boulders that we could see - ever changing as the haze would dissipate and the sun striking the points and high spots. It took us four hours to go the 126 miles and we arrived there at 12:45 PM. We had inquired about a picnic area and had been referred to Rock Nook Park. The road led in to the woods and at individual picnic tales a barbecue fire place was arranged for with firewood. We did not make a fire because we had arranged a Picnic Lunch of Ham - Tuna Fish Salad- Tomatoes- Cucumbers- Lettuce- Crackers- Canteloupe-Coffee and Milk. Kids found some swings and there was plenty of room to roam around. The Kids didn't want to leave and we didn't either to be honest - but we had to get going in order to get back in time to visit with Hugo tonight. So we spent only 1 1/2 hours there. On to St Barbara's Mission and the enclosed cards and circulars explain the history and background much better than I can write it. There is more life at St Barbara than at Capistrano but it lacked something of the peace and tranquility of Capistrano. At stated intervals one of the Franciscans would take a group on a lecture tour explaining the history of the Mission. The kids in talking with the Lecturer disclosed the fact that they came from Boston. It so happened that he wads born and raised in the South End on Union Park Street and his Mother still lives there at 118 Union Park Street. His Mother's name is Mrs Irene McCormick and his name was Fr. John Marie. Said we would look her up. We left there around 4 PM and started the 126 miles home again. Didn't get home until after 7:30 - kids ready for bed-and off to Hugo's at 8:30 in Anaheim.
my grandfather kept a log of the trip cross country in 1955. I have scanned it, and typed the text for easier reading.
